Zoey just brought me the four colorful gingerbread people from her Collector’s Edition Candy Land game. She told me that the red one was named Speestah. I asked her what the other ones were named, so she rattled off the names Zodah, Spiddit, and Stinko. I shook their little hands and (in Zoey’s voice) they said, “Nice to meet you!”

Where do our kids get these names for their toys? Ian has three favorite bath toys: “Tommy” is a new-style Fisher-Price kid with a frog and a hair brush; “Daddy” is an old Fisher-Price man with thinning hair (maybe from the old airport set); finally, Pirate is a pirate with articulated arms and legs. They play soccer and baseball in the bathtub, and hide from bears and the “bad pirates”.

Yeah, wacky kids—everyone knows pirates go by cooler names than that. However, Thinning Hair Guy = Daddy? Umm… Not a stretch? (Just call me Mister One To Talk.)

I tried to call the toy “Blackbeard” once, but Ian put on his mad face and said “No, Daddy. His name is Pirate.”
He also gets mad if you say anything like “You’re a big kid”, or “Hi, Dude!” He says “No! I’m IAN.”
I don’t know where Tommy got his name. I also don’t know why he calls Zoey “Jay-Jay”. Yesterday he said “I LOVE Jay-Jay! Jay-Jay and Unca Evan live in Seattle. Let’s go!”.
