Last night we did our normal bedtime routine, which ends with Zoey in her crib and Rona slipping out the door while I read The Big Red Barn. Not long into the story, Zoey put her hands on my cheeks and then put one finger to her lips and made a shh! sound (this latter is something her Mommy taught her—we’re not sure about the hands on the face thing).
She then went back to her normal roaming/rolling/bouncing around the crib. She grabbed the book from my hands while doing this, which she does sometimes—I’ve told her the story hundreds of times, so the book has long been just a prop. But then she stood up and repeated her actions from before—hands on my face, then the finger to the lips, and shhh!
"Are we done with Big Red Barn?" I asked.
She nodded.
"Are you ready for sleepy-sleep?"
She nodded and put her hands together next to her cheek—the sign for bed/sleep.
I put the book back on her dresser as if I’d read her the whole thing, turned out her light, started her lullabyes CD, and left the room.
She fell asleep faster than she’s done in a long time.
And I’m still smiling.
