No, I don’t mean the shuttle service to and from SeaTac. I mean the 1s and 0s that make up this post are flying across the room to my new Apple AirPort Express, courtesy of Robert. The setup was quick and painless, and it works great! I haven’t looked into figuring out how to tell if we’re taking full advantage of the speed increase over the Netgear wireless router we were using before. Theoretically we’re now pushing data at 54 Mbps, since we’re using 802.11g instead of 802.11b. The AirPort Express is tiny, too, so I was able to put it on top of a wall-mounted speaker, thus improving the reception. Our HP Officejet printer is plugged into the new router’s USB port, so we don’t need to have the printer plugged in to Rona’s laptop in order to print, which was just silly. The downside is that we can’t use the printer’s scanner feature unless we move that USB plug back into the laptop. Maybe our next multifunction printer will have a Bluetooth connection for the scanner. That and an optical cable so I can plug the AirPort into the entertainment center and stream music from iTunes over the stereo, and my passage to geek heaven will be complete!
