We got up at 3:30 AM to get to the airport for our 7:05 flight on Southwest Airlines. Despite in-flight assurances to the contrary, we had to switch planes at Midway Airport in Chicago. We left Chicago around 1-ish. In the flight attendant’s “thanks for flying with us” schpiel, he said, “And for those of you leaving us to fly a different airline, we don’t care.” We got in to the airport in Central Islip on Long Island at about 5:30, New York time.
We picked up the rental mini-van and headed off to Cousins Evalynne and Larry and baby Delaney’s house. We said hi to everybody, including Grandma Jean, who actually lives in the mother-in-law apartment.
The details at this point are a little vague. I’m pretty sure we got hungry and headed off to the diner. The diner wasn’t the only one around, and it had a name, of course, but I just remember all the chrome and that I suspected our waitress used to be a waiter and that it smelled uncomfortably rather than appetizingly like fish to me in there. I had the chicken parmesan, and a lot of it, with enough leftovers for Rona to have a midnight snack and for me to have breakfast. Not what you’d expect from an actual Italian place, but it was quite passable for diner food. And did I mention there was a lot of everything?
I think we went from there to Alan and Mindy’s house (Mindy is Larry’s sister) to crash. They are very sweet, and were most kind to let us all crash there every night. They went out of their way to actually make us feel like we really should make ourselves at home, rather than that they were just saying that. They meant it. Their cat, Sonny, is equally sweet. We were very tired by now, so we went to sleep.
